Ideas for Action

Resist Harm offers these additional ideas for your use. They came from a broadly representative group of United Methodists who gathered after the Special General Conference. While the list is not exhaustive, we hope they will be helpful as you plan. They reflect the diversity of contexts around the connection.

Crash a WCA meeting.

File charges against the WCA and WCA leaders on January 2.

Hold Vigils of Resistance at prominent WCA Churches on January 2, with acts of forgiveness for the WCA. Rise above the hurt and damage to live out “When they go low we go high” and “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Circle WCA churches singing and praying for (their) conversion.

Add a million addresses to IRD and WCA mailing lists (but never open) in order to raise their mailing costs.

Fill WCA churches with people who are LGBTQI+ on a given Sunday

Take the Resist Harm message to headquarters of WCA, Good News, IRD and Confessing Movement.

Hold a prayer vigil at WCA churches.

Pray for the WCA.

Have a virtual service on Reconciling Ministries Network.

Celebrate churches that become reconciling churches.

Wait to announce all the churches working towards becoming Reconciling and share their public statements together on January 2 or Sunday, January 5.

Have a Redaction Party where the "incompatible" language is blacked out.

Use the ashes of burned ordination certificates or incompatibility pages of the Book of Discipline for Ash Wednesday.

Burn incompatibility pages of the Discipline.

Burn our ordination certificates.

Participate in a National Day of holy OUTrage and OUTreach.

Plan a day of sacred coming out stories.

Provide a Coming Out Day (time and space) for individuals, allies, pastors.

Leverage National Pride Day or National Coming Out Day to include clergy.

Give support to LGBT clergy as they come out by all clergy “coming out” with them.

Plan a Board of Ordained Ministry walk out (depending on your context).

Support mass actions of LGBTQ persons – joining the church the same day, walking out of the service together (and explain the reason in a way that invites allies).

Observe a Service of Silence in recognition of those who are not included.

Staff walkout on a Sunday morning (without compromising worship).

Send letters to WCA and Central Conferences to create relationships.

Give to Resist Harm

Resist Harm is not an organization or a coalition. It has no employees, offices, or overhead. However, it does incur expenses for web infrastructure, promotion, printing, and organizing. We are a movement of volunteers and 100% funded by people and churches like you. Anything you give helps to make this movement more effective. To give, donate at Reconciling Ministries Network’s website and designate “Resist Harm.” 100% of your gift will pay for Resist Harm’s direct costs. RMN has graciously agreed to administer the funds donated for the Resistance movement for no charge.
